WHY DOES HOLDING A PISTOL SQUAT BURN?

MOVEMENT OF THE DAY
SINGLE LEG HAMSTRING STRETCH

How to perform it:

Sit on the floor with one leg extended and the other bent, placing the sole of your foot against the mid-thigh of the extended leg. Keep your back straight as you hinge forward from the hips, reaching toward your toes.

Watch me perform this exercise here.

Why it helps:

The Single Leg Hamstring Stretch improves hamstring flexibility, relieves lower back and knee tension, and enhances posture. It also helps prevent injuries by reducing muscle tightness and imbalances.

QUESTIONS FROM READERS
WHY DOES HOLDING A PISTOL SQUAT BURN?

QUESTION:

Hey David,

I love snowboarding and figured mastering the pistol squat would make me better. I nailed it, BUT—emphasis on butt—holding my foot on the way up burns like crazy!

I can touch my toes and work my hip flexors, but I still have no clue why this happens. Could you help me out?

Best,

Greyson

ANSWER:

Hey Greyson!

I’ve done wakeboarding and other water sports, but I haven’t tried snowboarding yet—would love to give it a shot someday!

If you feel a pistol squat mostly in your butt, it could mean you need more ankle mobility. Here’s a quick video on ankles that might help (BUTT, I realize that was mostly a joke).

It sounds like the real challenge is holding your leg up. Instead of stretching your hip flexors, I’d focus on strengthening them in a short range of motion. Those are called compression exercises.
