Narratives
What the Circus Taught Me

For the past four years, I've always been the most flexible person in the room. That was until I visited the Las Vegas Circus Center.

As I stepped onto their gym floor, I was surrounded by athletes more flexible, more dedicated, and stronger than I could have imagined. Naturally, I thought I could keep up. I mean, I can do the splits… right?

Even after 11 days of training there, I was still sore. Imagine two barbells on the floor, one foot and one hand on each. As the barbells roll apart, you hang on while splitting closer to the ground.

After five sets, I finally managed to bounce my pelvis on the floor in an oversplit while my legs remained elevated. My friend Nathan made this look easy…

I never thought I'd attempt this, let alone succeed. But the biggest takeaway wasn't the oversplit; it was the motivation I gained from training alongside world-class circus athletes.

One day, I hope to be half as capable as they are. What an incredible, humbling experience.

Stay Flexy,

David

Movement of the Day
Deep Split Squat

This movement builds lower body strength while improving balance, hip mobility, and knee stability.

Watch the demo here.

How to Do It:

Step into a long split stance. Lower until your back knee is just above the floor, then press through your front heel to return to standing.

Repeat for 5 reps, then switch sides.

Tips:

• Keep your front knee tracking over your toes
• Stay tall through your torso
• Move slowly and with control

Many of these exercises are in my printed flexibility routine.

Myth-Busting
MYTH: No soreness = No gains

DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) means the stimulus was new. Progress comes from steady, progressive loading, not next-day pain.

Today’s Challenge
The Ankle Mobility Check

Lift one foot off the ground and slowly make 20 circles in each direction before switching sides (hold on to a wall or chair if you need extra balance).

Reply and let me know which ankle felt stiffer, because noticing side-to-side differences is the first step toward better mobility.

Check out the last challenge here.
